After months of stressful negotiation and paperwork, I have finally settled into my new home in Truckee, California! The weekends have been jam packed with moving, cleaning, decorating... the whole shebang. Things are finally starting to look up though, and by things, I mean me! I've looked up from the boxes and bags in order to take a look around my new home and town.
Truckee is known for it's location near the Sierra Nevada crest and its intense snowfall during the winter. These factors make it an ideal location for tubing, skiing, snowboarding... really any winter activity you can imagine. I have yet to hit the slopes, but am looking forward to the fact that I have three nearby resorts to choose from.
Part of what I'm loving about my new town is Truckee's quirky history. I heard recently that Truckee was named after a Paiute Chief, Tru-ki-zo. It's believed that the first Europeans who came across the Sierra Nevada's where greeted by him riding towards them yelling "Tro-kay", which is Paiute for "Everything is all right". Supposedly the travelers assumed it was his name, thus it's present day name. How great is that?!
The other thing I love about Truckee is its cute downtown that's chalked full of shops, restaurants, and bars. Last weekend I did a lap down Donner Pass Road to check out a few home decor stores and scope out restaurants to take my parents when they visit. My favorite store so far has been Mountain Hardware and Sports because they carry EVERYTHING you could possibly need, as well as the cutest cabin furnishings. I know, I wasn't expecting furnishings at a hardware store either!
To warm up during my exploration I popped in at Morgan's Lobster Shack & Fish Market for some AWESOME Clam Chowder. Everything on the menu looked great, and they have a fresh fish counter with fair prices. That night I ended up going to dinner at Truckee Tavern & Grill, which was a solid choice. Their cocktail menu was spot on (I had a whiskey drink with orange) and their pork chop was delicious!
I have many more places to hit up, but am loving my new town thus far!
